It could be the one statement to help busy cleaners, housewives or househusbands everywhere – that cleaning products can be dangerous!
Before you throw your mops down and run for the hills, for most of the time, common domestic cleaning products are perfectly safe to use.
However there are incidents when individuals can receive a personal injury due to the chemicals in some products.
Whilst minor chemical burns from cleaning fluids and bleach are very common, a recent case where no win no fee solicitors helped one woman win, displays how faulty products can turn even the most domesticated house or business into chaos.
The victim, a cleaner at a swimming baths and leisure centre, had been using one of the Cillit Bang cleaning products in one of the steam rooms at work.
The mixture of heat and an enclosed space meant that the fumes from the cleaning product were concentrated when she was working.
The cleaner continued work, unaware of the fumes from the cleaning fluid until two of her colleagues alerted her to the strong smell where she was working.
She went for some fresh air whilst the air in the steam room cleared.
However, around 3 hours later she began feeling unwell, with a sore throat. Her symptoms continued that evening after work and by the morning the next day she was finding it difficult to swallow.
She went to her GP who prescribed her something to help with her sore throat. Despite medical aid, it was several months before she completely recovered from the effects of inhaling the cleaning fluid fumes.
Her symptoms were still persistent, so she enlisted the help of no win no fee solicitors to file a work claim.
The case was revolved around the professional negligence of her boss, who shouldn’t have given the worker cleaning products that would make it difficult to breathe.
As a result, the victim successfully won a compensation claim, but the incident serves a reminder of health and safety issues and the dangers that can arise from using cleaning products that are unsuitable for confined spaces.
